UWC Northern Ireland is a volunteer-led group dedicated to selecting and supporting students and their families for the UWC movement. Our members are passionate about education and international understanding, working together to create opportunities for young changemakers.
We believe that the unique history, political status, and social make-up of Northern Ireland makes the UWC experience especially pertinent to our young people. After all, UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
Our UWC National Committee is made up of individuals who share UWC’s mission and values. These include:
- UWC alums and their families – Former students who have attended UWC schools or short courses and their families, bringing firsthand experience of the UWC journey.
- Education professionals – Teachers, school administrators, and educators who are committed to nurturing young minds and promoting transformative education.
- Community leaders – Individuals from various sectors who support youth development and global citizenship.
- Other volunteers – Supporters of UWC who contribute their time and expertise to help select and guide students.
Our history and impact
- Northern Ireland has a long tradition of sending students to United World Colleges. In the 1990s and 2000s, Northern Irish students regularly took up places at UWC Atlantic College, Wales, and UWC Pearson College, Canada. The National Committee was re-founded in 2017 after a prolonged hiatus.
- Since 2017, 13 students from have attended UWC schools and colleges (UWC Atlantic, UWC East Africa, UWC Mostar, UWC Mahindra, UWC-ISAK Japan, UWC Robert Bosch, UWC Thailand and UWC USA).
- The number of applications we receive varies each year and we would like to see the number increase. We carefully select students through our rigorous selection process.
- All of our students have received scholarships over the years, making UWC accessible to students from all backgrounds.
Our commitment
- As part of the global UWC National Committee network, we adhere to UWC’s principles and selection standards.
- Our volunteers include many UWC alums who understand the experience first hand and are dedicated to guiding new students.
- We maintain strong connections with UWC schools, colleges, and alumni to offer insights and support to students and their families throughout their journey.
